Oral Motor

Proprioception is our bodies awareness of position and movement. Muscles and joints detect proprioceptive input, through the stretching, bending, pushing and pulling of muscles and joints. The jaw also provides regular proprioceptive input to the central nervous system as we bite and chew. This input is calming and organising to the central nervous system and assists in self-regulation. Some children require more oral motor input to support regulation, such as chewing, biting or mouthing objects.
